History of East Gardendale Baptist Church

June 10, 2012

In June 1998, a small group of Christians, led by Brother Ray Moore, ventured out on a journey of faith with a dream to build a new church in Gardendale.  Under his leadership, East Gardendale Baptist Church was organized on June 21, 1998  and became a chartered church on November 16, 1998.  The first services were held in the Moore’s old family home on Tarrant Road.  As our church grew, more space was needed.  In November 1998, we purchased the property at 805 Main Street in Gardendale.  Faithful members spent many hours working to transform the former KinderCare facility into a church building including a sanctuary with a sitting capacity of 144.   The first service was held on January 3, 1999. On June 9, 1999, a dedication ceremony was held.

The Founding Pastor retired in December 2000.  Brother Allen Davis began serving as Interim Pastor in September 1999 and was called as Pastor in January 2001.  In 2002, we voted to join the Birmingham Baptist Association.  We have been privileged to send members on six foreign mission trips, contributed to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, we participate in Operation Christmas Child, Food for Friends and support Lottie Moon, Annie Armstrong, and World Changers along with numerous local mission efforts. Our first VBS was held in June 2004, 37 children attended and 13 accepted Christ.  In April 2005, we implemented a Children’s Program including Children’s Church. We have an active Adult Choir that rehearses on Wednesday night after Bible Study.

From the beginning, we knew that someday we would build a new Church building.  Pastor Allen Davis had a vision that we would build our new Church in the East Gardendale area and in June 2002, we purchased six acres on Tarrant Road in the same area where the journey began in 1998.  The property was prepared for construction, a building committee was formed and on Saturday, May 5, 2007, we held our groundbreaking ceremony for a new one-story brick building with 14,000 square feet.  We selected Southwood Construction to design and build and Superior Bank to finance our new facility. On Sunday, March 30, 2008, we held a Special Last Service at 805 Main Street.  During this service, members participated by placing memory cards in the little replica church as Brother Allen read aloud the names of those members who had gone to be with the Lord.  We also placed attribute cards in the replica church reflecting those traits that we wanted to carry with us as we prepared to cross over to 360 Tarrant Road.

On Wednesday night, April 2, 2008, we held our first service at our new location and received four new members. Our Dedication Ceremony was held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, and while Kerry Sparks blew the Shofar, we marched around the sanctuary seven times carrying the replica church building on supports with our desired attribute cards inside.  Our first Sunday Worship Service was held April 6, 2008 and five new members were received into our fellowship.  On Sunday, April 20, 2008, we held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House.  On Sunday, May 4, 2008, eleven believers were baptized at the first Baptismal Service at East Gardendale Baptist Church.

We currently have ten Sunday School classes meeting before Sunday morning Worship Service.  Our Tuesday Women’s Bible Study, Wednesday morning Men’s Prayer Group and our Wednesday night Bible Study provides additional fellowship and growth for adults, youth and children.

In the Spring, we host an Egg Hunt for the children in the community.  On May 19, 2012 we held our fourth annual Fisher of Souls Fish Fry attendance exceeded 400. In August, we have one night per week revival meetings where we invite special speakers and musical guests for August Alive.  In the fall, we host Trunk ‘r Treat, another free event for the children in the community. These rewarding outreach events are free to the community.

God has richly blessed our Church and since moving to our present location; we have added many to our church family, we have a current membership of 333.

When we look back over the past fourteen years, we praise God for His blessings and pause to reflect on our vision.

“To provide a haven of rest, fellowship and love   for the believer and a place of hope for the lost.”

As we continue to move forward, let us always be true to both our vision and mission statements, opening our doors to a lost and hurting world.
